As cosmetic surgery continues to gain in popularity, more methods of reshaping the body are devised and tested, and eventually approved by the FDA. One recent such method is Velashape™, manufactured by Syneron™. The FDA gave it pre-marketing clearance for temporary reduction of cellulite and of thigh circumference.
What is Velashape?
It's a device that delivers a combination of radio frequency (RF) and infrared light, in a highly controllable way, to heat the targeted body area. It does not burn the area, because of its several efficient safety features:
- A treatment tip of sapphire which is cool and directs the pulsed RF below the skin surface to the dermis, the next skin layer down
- A monitoring system which gives your cosmetic surgeon continuous real-time feedback on skin temperature with each RF pulse
- A contact check which prevents any RF energy being released until the electrodes are safely coupled
Along with the RF and light energies, both a vacuum device and special rollers manipulate the treated tissue.
In treatments lasting about 30 minutes, several areas can be treated, typically the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, neck, and upper arms. Results are visible after about four treatments, usually spaced one week apart. On average, thigh circumference reduces by about an inch, but in some cases, by several inches. Cellulite reduces to give you a smoother skin.
How Velashape works
The combination of heat and special manipulation makes the body metabolize fat (which is simply stored energy) more quickly. It also increases the drainage of lymph, a yellowish liquid which circulates in the body much the way blood circulates in a network of vessels.
Lymph has several jobs to do and one is removing extra fluid from body tissue. Another is absorbing fat and transporting it to the circulatory system. In these ways, the lymph removes fat and fluid from the treated areas so that after several weeks of treatment, you can see the difference. Fat cells have shrunk in size and excess fluid has drained away.
Recovery
Typically, there are no side effects. There may be a little reddening which fades quickly. You can return to normal activities the same day.
