| Because you will need someone to care for you for at least 24 hours and ideally 48 hours following your procedure, it is important to plan around your schedule as well as your caregivers. You may need to plan on an overnight stay for pain control. The recovery period varies depending upon the extent of surgery and the individual. Generally, five days to two weeks is required. Liposuction alone may require 3-10 days, if the tummy tuck is combined with liposuction, more time is required. Generally, the abdominoplasty procedure requires around 2 weeks of recovery time. The swelling will peak in about 3 days and will then improve within 2-4 weeks. Three months may be required to eliminate the swelling. Two drains will be placed in the abdomen during surgery (to help the skin flap "seal" back down) after the skin has been moved downward. These plastic drains prevent postoperative fluid collections, called "seromas". You will have to empty the reservoirs attached to the drains several times daily. Generally, the drains are removed between 2 days and 2 weeks following surgery. At least one of these is usually removed within the first week. Although the absorbable stitches do not require removal, the remaining sutures are usually removed within the first week. You may resume driving and return to work once you stop taking pain medication (1-2 weeks). However, lifting and strenuous activities will be more limited than with liposuction of the abdomen. Consequently, if your job requires lifting or manual labor, you should wait 4-6 weeks because vigorous or aerobic activity cannot be resumed for 4-6 weeks. |
